What are reduced movements?

We excitedly wait for the day that we finally feel our baby move! For many first time mothers we might start to feel some movements anywhere from 16 – 24 weeks, depending on the location of the placenta.

As the baby gets bigger and stronger, their movements become more distinct.

Your baby’s movements are an indication of how your baby is growing, developing and their general well-being.

From about 28 weeks of pregnancy your baby will develop a pattern with their movements, and it’s important for mum’s to pay attention to this pattern. Any change in your baby’s movements should be checked by a midwife.

If movements reduce, stop or change you need to be checked immediately. Don’t wait until the next day. If your baby’s movements change in their strength, pattern or frequency you both need to be checked.

As a general rule you should have your maternity care providers number in your phone for any reason you need to call.

Did you know?

It is actually the pattern of movements that is important to monitor. Your baby is unique and will have their own way of moving. So be mindful not to compare this baby to other pregnancies.

Ten movement facts

  1. As the baby’s legs and arms grow, the mother feels more distinct limb movements.
  2. Up until  the  3rd trimester, babies do somersaults, rolls and whole body flips. Closer to the due date there is not enough room for them to move around so much.
  3. Babies who are in a breech, (bottom down) position often have their head up under their mother’s ribs.
  4. When a mother prods or pokes her tummy, their baby may move in response.
  5. Babies tend to move more at certain times of the day.
  6. Babies spend long periods of time sleeping.
  7. Babies go through waking and sleeping cycles.
  8. Some babies are more energetic than others.
  9. Sometimes movements can be uncomfortable for a pregnant mother.
  10. Babies always seem to kick and move around more when their mother has a full bladder.
